Gin-making in Australia is a relatively young industry compared to British and European markets.

However, with the spirit’s rising popularity over the years, this industry is experiencing rapid growth. This is proven by the emergence of new gin distilleries across the country every month. The number of gin distilleries has grown from less than 10 five years ago to over 100 distilleries today.

It’s no wonder then that local and international tourists are suddenly flocking to book gin distillery tours! There’s nothing more intimate than knowing how your favourite gin is made, packaged, and paired with different foods.

Byron Bay is home to two famous gin distilleries – Lord Byron Distillery and Cape Byron Distillery. Both offer amazing gin products made from ingredients sourced within Byron Bay, with the land and its location providing the perfect conditions for the fruits and crops needed to formulate the products.

If you’re visiting Byron Bay and looking for a cool and interesting tour to take with your friends, consider booking a Byron Bay gin distillery tour. To help you decide here are a few things you can expect.

What Can You Expect In A Byron Bay Gin Tour?

Gin distillery tours are a great way to learn more about Australia’s flourishing craft gin distillation scene. A gin tour in Byron Bay will give you the opportunity to see how gins and other spirits are made, and this will give you a new level of appreciation for your drinks.

The tour usually starts with meeting your local tour guide and your tourmates at a central pick up location near the first of usually three to four distilleries in your itinerary. In addition to learning all about and tasting some amazing gin, having a dedicated local tour guide will help you learn all about Byron Bay’s history, local food culture, and even lesser known sights you and your friends might want to check out.

When you arrive at the distillery, you’ll get an overview of the distillery’s production processes and machinery, with the opportunity to visit their stills and learn about their botanicals and bottling setup. Your local tour guide will provide you with the distillery’s history and famous products.

Distillery tours in Byron Bay usually also include a tasting paddle. A tasting paddle carries six to eight glasses of different types of gin. This allows you to get a taste of each one without – ideally – getting too inebriated during the tour.

During the tour, you will also get the chance to meet an experienced distiller that will explain the process of distilling, the differences between different types of gin, and how to best enjoy it alone or with friends.

Cookie’s Tips for Distillery Tour Visitors

Now that you’re ready to embark on your first (or fifth) Byron Bay gin distillery tour, here are some tips from your local tour guide:

1. Be prepared to learn.

Distillery and brewery tours are usually dismissed as just an excuse to have a session while you’re on holiday. That’s not truly the case. If you’re looking for a plain and easy drinking session, you might end up disappointed with the tour.

This is because (1) the tasting paddle is always served at the end of the tour and (2) the emphasis of these types of tours is in the historical and educational impact on its participants.

2. “Nose” the gin before tasting it.

Don’t worry, you’ll be guided by an experienced distiller and your tour guide during the tasting. “Nosing” the gin just means giving the liquid a quick sharp blow within the glass to get rid of the first smell of alcohol fumes. By blowing it away, it’ll be easier for you to smell the botanicals.

3. Eat before the tour.

Full-day tours offer lunch as part of the package but half-day tours usually don’t. If you’re off for a long walk and a gin tasting at the end of the tour, it’s just best to make sure that you don’t do it on an empty stomach.

Drinking gin neat is a great experience, you just have to be prepared for it. So, don’t forget to eat your breakfast!
